Why Laughter Rules
Why do we feel so awesome after a belly laugh

For those of you who received my email last week, I had “test” in the subject line which was the ultimate egg on the face move. But just like in stand up, the mistake happened and all I could do was move on.
Let this be a lesson to you about making mistakes - who gives a crap.
LAUGHING & DEVELOPMENT
Why Laughter Rules
You’ve probably heard the famous line “Laughter is the Best Medicine.” Or “Live, Laugh, Love.” Or at a wedding someone saying, “I wish you a lifetime of love and laughter.”
As adults, we are constantly giving advice to laugh more, but very few people actually take the advice.
Kids laugh ~300 times per day.
Adults? Only ~20. (Robert Provine’s fieldwork — Mental Floss)
Many adults think finding time to laugh is a luxury. It’s not. It should be as essential as making time for the gym or getting your Zone 2 cardio in for heart health.
Making people laugh isn’t even that hard. 90% of laughter can come from a well placed mundane comment like “I see your point” (Robert Provine’s fieldwork — Mental Floss).
Science is clear: laughter isn’t just fun - it’s biology’s way of keeping us alive, sane, and connected. Keeping things light is good for us.
The Biological High of Laughter
When you engage in laughter, you might as well be taking an all natural drug:
Endorphins surge → boost mood & lower pain (Dunbar et al., Proc. Royal Soc. B).
Cortisol drops → less stress, more calm (VA Research).
Immune system gets a lift → even anticipating laughter reduces stress hormones (ScienceDaily).
Laughter has so many personal benefits, but ever wondered why you feel connected with a room full of strangers after seeing a comedy show? Like you all went through something together?
Oxytocin release → the “trust hormone” that makes us feel connected (Manninen et al., J. Neurosci.).
Shared laughter = shared identity → people who laugh together stick together (Allure).
“Social glue” → Robin Dunbar found laughter evolved to bond groups (Science Mag).
Workplaces often treat laughter like a distraction. In reality, it’s fuel. Both for team bonding and professional development.
Let’s start taking our own advice and find ways to laugh more - at work, home, or in the second half of the LaughRx newsletter.
