Feel Good, Play Good

Being in a good mood goes a long way

After a short summer break, Laugh.Rx is back delivering the goods to bridge the gap between comedy ←→ science ←→ work performance.

LAUGHING & DEVELOPMENT

Feel Good, Play Good

When I played sports growing up, my coaches always said, “Feel good, play good.”

In my case, “play good” meant clapping enthusiastically from the bench.

When I started doing stand-up, I obsessed over my set list and timing, but I didn’t realize how I felt going on stage mattered just as much. So I started looking to comics for how they get themselves ready.

Pete Holmes swears by a quick workout:

“All I have to do is get to the show at 8:00 and be in a good mood… I have to go to the gym… I walk uphill on a treadmill for 30 minutes. Thirty minutes of heart elevation is the same as taking Prozac, which is insane because Prozac is a very strong drug.”

- Pete Holmes, Unsound Advice podcast

Jerry Seinfeld would psyche himself up with music:

“I’d play the theme from Superman really loud and just think about coming out on that stage.”

- Jerry Seinfeld, Vanity Fair

And it’s not just about hype - it’s about staying calm. Stanford Graduate School of Business lecturer Matt Abrahams emphasizes that lower stress enhances audience retention: the calmer and more composed you are, the more your audience will remember.

A Few Ways to Get Psyched Before a Big Moment

  • Work out – Burns off jitters, boosts mood.

The last stand-up show I did, the host found me doing body squats in the kitchen. The Mayo Clinic confirms that even moderate exercise can boost endorphins and reduce adrenaline and cortisol.

  • Music – Find your personal hype track.

I have a playlist dedicated to psyching myself up; the newest addition is I’ll Make a Man Out of You from the Mulan soundtrack. I dare you to listen to it and not feel like you can take on the Huns.

  • Prepare – The more familiar you are with your material, the more comfortable you’ll feel delivering it.

  • Meditate – Lower that heart rate and center yourself.

Feel good, play good… and look good doing it.
